Internet Security Guide Series Part 1 of 3

In this brand new three part series of our internet security guide, I plan to cover as much essential information on internet security as possible while making sure that it is easy to understand for readers who are not as technically-savvy. Whether you are familiar with internet security or someone new to this seemingly complicated topic, I am sure that within this guide there will be some good nuggets of information.

For the first part of the series, we will look at the different types of internet security software available. In the course of reading, you could use this guide to help you evaluate if your computer security is lacking in any aspects.

Without any security software install on your computer, your system is vulnerable to viruses, spywares, malwares, email spam and hackers. Your important data could be corrupted or deleted, sensitive account passwords and credit card information stolen or your online identity hijacked.

You need to secure your computer – either with a comprehensive internet security suite or a combination of different security software.

Types of Internet Security

Antivirus. An antivirus program provides essential protection for any computer system. Keeps destructive viruses at bay by matching suspicious system behaviors to database signature files.

Antispyware. An antispyware program helps to protect your system from malicious programs which attempt to spy on your computer activities and send these recorded information to unauthorized parties.

Antispam. An antispam program defends your computer from email spams which seemingly always sell (fake) sex drugs and offer free casino bonuses (with many strings attached).

Firewall. A firewall allows you to monitor network and internet traffic that is entering and leaving your computer. It serves to alert you when unauthorized programs attempt to access the internet without permission and also protects your computer from hackers who may try to access your important data remotely.

Internet Filtering and Parental Control. Internet filtering warns you of fake websites which attempt to masquerade as real ones to collect your account login details. This protects you from giving out your sensitive login information to scammers unknowingly. On the other hand, parental control programs ensure that your kids are protected against undesirable content such as violence, pornography, hate-mongering and illegal materials. It is not easy for parents to monitor what their children are doing online, and parental control enables parents to block out these undesirable sites and ensure a safe web surfing experience for their loved ones.

Ad Blocker. Ad blockers help to make your web surfing experience more enjoyable by blocking out annoying flashing banners and pop up advertisements which seem to come with almost every website nowadays. Some also help to block out tracking cookies which monitor the websites you visit.

Identity Theft Protection. Offered as a service rather than a product like most of the security features mentioned so far, identity theft protection helps to protect your identity online and your credit profile. Usually offered in monthly or yearly plans, such subscription services include identity monitoring, identity theft insurance, emergency response as well as credit score tracking.

The above internet security features work in combination to protect your computer from all types of threat. If you are thinking that is a lot of different programs to purchase and install on your computer, fret not. While it is true that these internet security features may be available as individual, standalone products, many modern internet security suites such as BitDefender Internet Security and Kaspersky Internet Security already contain most of these features. They might be missing either one or two security components, but that can be easily fixed by using complementary programs which can address these security weaknesses.
